I have worked with a gaming company called Solanimus inc. and during my time with I have created a number of models using both Maya and Blender. Many of these models are fleshed out concepts and serve as place holders for completed models in the future.

Cletus

This is the first character I designed for the kart racing game I am helping to create. He is designed to be a cartoonish rendition of a hillbilly. He also is my first attempt to create a human model in Maya, I was able to learn much in the process. This particular version possesses a Santa hat as it altered slightly for a Christmas themed level.

Scurvy
Another racer character I created based on a concept of a retired pirate captain already devised by Solanimus. I creation went far smoother due to what I learned when modeling Cletus. This version is all a Christmas themed one, and some of my favorite features include his quirky off center facial features, his Rudolph fish bowl, and his candy cane hook hand.

Abraham Lincoln

The members of Solanimus were insistent that our 16th US president be a racer in the game. The model I created is simple with cartoonish features to match the style of the other characters. But, with this particular model I experimented with modeling a single half of the character and mirroring it. While it mostly worked in creating the model, I found that it was not ideal for rigging.

In addition to the racers, I also molded go-karts for each of them. The karts are designed to look hastily and roughly put together using junk as materials and possessing jury-rigged weaponry. They are also meant to reflect certain aspects of the character’s personality. This kart is meant to be an exaggerated reference to his rustic heritage including a log cabin like chassi with a fire place engine as well as an axe thrower, beaver slingshot, and bald eagle as the weapons.

Bobs

The last full character I modeled for the racing game was themed as a train yard hobo. This was first attempt a creating a human character in blender and I learned much through trial and error. The most crucial thing I learned in his creation process is how to properly use Blender’s mirroring tool while modeling to ensure the final product both looks good and is easy to rig.

Handkart

This kart is the first version meant for Bobs and is based on a train yard handcart. This was my first attempt a creating a detailed and fully armed, yet functional, go-kart so many aspects on how its individual pieces work were taken into account. It is an unique design that takes an old train engine and powers it through a handcart’s lever. Other fun features include a break made from an old shoe, a guillotine weapon made from a train crossing gate, and even has a luggage catapult.

Box Car

The second version of Bobs’s go-kart that is based off a box car. This version is my particular favorite due to the design and unique weapons. It is designed to be larger and bulkier than the Handkart, but lack its mobility and speed. The various pieces of the karts are meant to be interchangeable with one another; so I modeled it using the Handkart as a base to ensure all the pieces, such as the wells and engine, fit perfectly with each other. I am most proud of the steam engine I created which fits onto both sets of wheels and uses the lever to power the billow. The weapons include a rail rode spike machine gun and a coal hazard dropper.
